Fibromyalgia Pain Management
Ongoing chronic pain is distressing both physically and psychologically. Often you can’t see past the symptoms you suffer; they blur your brain, deplete your energy, and remove your motivation to do the things you find fulfilling. Chronic pain conditions are by definition ongoing, but you can learn to overcome the symptoms by taking a holistic approach to pain management; this includes psychotherapy.
Counselling and Psychotherapy offers chronic pain management therapy for conditions such as fibromyalgia in our clinics across the city including in Carlton, Armadale, and Ringwood. Our psychotherapists use the Gestalt Therapy method to help patients learn to manage and lessen their pain experience.
Fibromyalgia is a frustrating, stressful and of course painful condition to live with. Known as a medically unexplained syndrome (MUS), fibromyalgia is thought to result from a combination of genetic, lifestyle, psychological and personal history factors. Whatever the cause, it is theorised that the symptoms of fibromyalgia result from abnormal function in the pain processing pathways of the brain. An excess of neurons sets these pathways into a hyper excitable state, resulting in the individual experiencing pain.
Sufferers of this condition experience ongoing pain balanced across the body, often in 18 designated ‘tender points’. There is no known cure for the condition however a number of studies have shown that some psychological and lifestyle related treatments can improve quality of life.
Our Treatment Methods
At clinics in Carlton, Armadale, Ringwood and throughout Melbourne, psychological treatment for fibromyalgia is undertaken in the form of Gestalt Therapy.
