Introduction to Gestalt Theory

A vase, people... or both? How we perceive an experience will differ from one person to the next.

Our history, personalities, ideas and desires will shape what we notice. Via a process of enquiry and curiosity an opportunity emerges for therapist and client to collaboratively explore and enquire into their own unique way of making sense of the world.

The objective of gestalt therapy is to support and enable the client to become more fully and creatively alive to promote awareness, support creative choice, encourage responsibility and facilitate connectedness in a person's efforts to realise a meaningful and fulfilling life.

Gestalt therapy posits a philosophical view of openness, transparency, kindness and compassion. The client and therapist will develop and co-create a unique relationship that will support qualities of trust and authenticity. Attention is directed toward exploring new sensations, feelings, thoughts and behaviour.

The therapeutic relationship is crucial as it illuminates the work that is necessary to help repair and heal.
